Mellasat 'M'

Introducing the new flagship blend - Mellasat 'M'

“M” – the prestigious, new flagship wine from the award-winning Mellasat Vineyards. Mellasat “M” will take its rightful place among the very finest of New World wines and will be sold through top-end merchants and on-trade establishments.

This wine brings together the excitement of Shiraz, the uniqueness of Pinotage and the nobility of Cabernet Sauvignon. The culmination of these experiences presents you with a wine that is structured, well-balanced and time-honoured.

The first vintage of Mellasat “M” was the 2003; the wine was blended in early February 2006 using 64% Shiraz, 21% Pinotage and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2004 vintage is available now by calling the office on 01508 488030.

Tasting notes for Mellasat ‘M’ 2003 by Paul Tholen MW

Appearance: Deep plum red, lots of extract visible.

Nose: Warm, ripe fruity nose. Mixed berry style with spicy undertones. Nice oaky note.

Palate: Good weight of fruit on palate. Considerable tannin gives the wine a robust structure. When initially opened, the wine was quite closed on the palate, so it was decanted and left for a couple of hours. When re-tasted, the underlying fruitiness was more evident, as were some ‘smoky’ tones not noticed earlier. The remnants, left in a closed decanter overnight were tasted approximately 24 hours after initial opening and were even better, with the grip of the tannin slightly less noticeable and with the ripeness of the fruit more obvious.

Conclusion: This is a multi-layered wine of quality that will repay keeping.

Mellasat 'Σ'

Introducing our new premium white wine - Mellasat 'Σ' - A variation on a theme

"Σ" - The first commercially available white wine in the world to be made from 100% pinotage grapes, it is a barrel fermented and matured white wine, which oozes tropical fruit on the nose leading to a creamy nuttiness on the palate.

The 2007 vintage of "Σ" was an experimental production which was received with such acclaim that it sold out in less than two weeks. With demand in South Africa from trade and consumers running high, the production of the 2008 vintage was trebled to 300 cases. Distributed in three equal amounts to Holland, the UK and South Africa, the wine has been an immediate success and with production set to increase for 2009, many more will be able to sample the luxurious wine that has revived the interest in South Africa’s own unique grape.

Back label reads: Craggy mountain tops and a vast sky overlook the gentle slopes of Dekkersvlei – home to Mellasat’s winery and the Richardson family.

The paradox of this wine is that the eye belies the other senses. Making white wine from red grapes using South Africa’s unique Pinotage grape. Whole bunch pressing prevented the juice from obtaining colour from the skins. Barrel fermented and matured for six months with less stirring gives the wine a slightly creamy, nutty character to balance the tropical fruit and banana flavours.

Technical Composition: Alcohol 13.5%, Residual sugar 2.2 g/litre, Total acidity 5.1 g/litre.

Mellasat Chardonnay 2010

Our latest premium white wine - the Mellasat Chardonnay 2010

The new Mellasat Chardonnay 2010 is a serious barrel fermented wine that remained in French oak for nine months with regular “batonnage” (lees stirring) to make it reminiscent of a burgundian style Chardonnay as opposed to an oaky, buttery new world style. It also has a crisp citrus taste and we expect this wine to continue improving for a while.
